Sorry for being M.I.A. the last couple of weeks, but things have been extra crazy in the run up to summer. I have a lot of things coming up in the next couple of weeks, but I wanted to share Dave Kerpen’s post Class of 2013: Master These 15 Simple Skills. I find him to be very knowledgable and I especially enjoyed his book, Likeable Social Media: How to Delight Your Customers, Create an Irresistible Brand, and Be Generally Amazing on Facebook (And Other Social Networks). Check out his website for his company, Likable Media. He’s also a great person to follow on Twitter. Please have a read and I promise to have much more to share with you in the weeks ahead!

College graduates: Congratulations on your degrees! I got mine 15 years ago this month at Boston University, and so I thought that, today, I’d share with you 15 simple things I’ve learned to do since college. Some of them are more serious than others, and some come with more stories and experiences than others, but I hope you’ll find them all to be worth your time. In an increasingly complex world, I, for one, prefer simplicity in my life – I like knowing what to do and not to do. So, without further ado:

1) Pursue your passions.

After I graduated from BU, I had a B.A. in Psychology and a B.S. in Education. I had anincredible college job as a ballpark vendor under my belt. But one thing I didn’t have was a clue about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. After four years, and a lot of money, that’s a really scary thing. For several months I floundered — as a life insurance salesman, a pizza delivery guy, and a tutor. Then I found a book which changed my life - What Color Is Your Parachute (incidentally, the best-selling career book of all time). The book essentially says: Figure out what you’re passionate about, and then go find an industry, organization and job through which you can pursue your passions. I was passionate about marketing, and media, and children, and I loved the Disney brand. So I found Radio Disney, called them up and asked to meet with them, and even though there was no job posted, I got a job there

A year later I was the top salesperson in the country, and while I have changed jobs and careers several times, I’ve always pursued things I’m super passionate about. If you don’t have a job yet, and take away just one thing from me today: Get the book.

By the way, I met another really passionate person at Radio Disney — pictured above with me is the person who dropped me from being the No. 1 salesperson in the country to No. 2 within three months of being hired. Her name was Carrie, and a few year later, I happened to marry her and go into business with her. I’ve learned that when you pursue your passions, things tend to work out.

2) Learn how to use the phone to talk.

We’ve had dozens of employees at our Likeableoffices over the last six years, many of them young, recent college graduates with degrees in marketing or communication, and yet one thing lacking in almost all of these smart people is phone skills. I guess we’re all so used to using our phones for texting, emailing and apps, we don’t really get much practice using our phones to actually talk anymore. In many organizations, simply being able to answer a phone call with a smile and carry on a quick but friendly conversation can actually be a competitive advantage, since so many people can’t do it. So go call a friend right now and talk. They’ll be time to text and tweet later.

3) Value every minute.

I’m sure you’ve heard many older people tell you that “time flies.” Well, it does, and while I’ve been searching for a solution to that problem for awhile, nobody’s solved it yet. So in the meantime, the only solution to the problem of limited time is to value and cherish each and every minute. It means avoiding time-sucks — like TV, meetings and email. It means scheduling your time carefully for everything you do. More important, it means prioritizing and scheduling time with the people that are important to you.

4) Be afraid, then take risks anyway.

There’s a great line from the Broadway show Avenue Q (great show, by the way, for recent college grads to see!): “Life may be scary, but it’s only temporary.” It’s true: Life is scary. Finding a job is scary, finding and keeping love is scary, even crossing the street is scary in some cities. But if we can feel fear and have the courage to take a risk anyway, the payout is always worth it. Fail and learn, or succeed and enjoy. I’ve certainly made my share of mistakes — including the globally televised reality TV show Paradise Hotel. (I’d recommend watching it for a laugh or two, but that would surely violate my last rule.) So start a business, ask out that girl you’ve had a crush on for years, stand up for what you believe is right. Feel the fear and do it anyway.

5) Take care of yourself.

At BU, I definitely put on the Freshman 15. Then I think I put on the Sophomore 10, the Junior 10 and the Senior 18. I’ve struggled with my weight for nearly all of my adult life, losing as much as 69 pounds after college. I’m a lifetime member of Weight Watchers — three times over. But I want to be around, for my wife and kids, as long as I can. There are no guarantees in life, but if you take care of your body, and put yourself first, as my wife and co-founder of Likeable Media Carrie says, you’ll not only increase your odds, you’ll be able to be a better leader and a peak performer in all aspects of your life.

6) Work on your listening skills.

I wasn’t always the best listener. I think part of the reason I didn’t have many successful dates or girlfriends in college is that I was one of those idiots that kept talking about myself instead of asking questions and shutting up. Today, I’m convinced that listening is the single most important skill – in my business of social media, in all businesses, in all relationships, and in life. Most people don’t go through life listening — they go through life waiting to talk. Take time to truly listen to people, whether it’s your friends and colleagues on Facebook and Twitter, your boss in a 1-on-1, your girlfriend, or your parents. Actively listen and focus on the person in front of you the way a child focuses on his favorite TV show. My motto, for years, since those unsuccessful college dating years, has been this: Listen first and never stop listening.

7) Reinvent yourself.

In the last fifteen years, I’ve been a ballpark vendor, radio salesperson, reality TV star, media entrepreneur, author, speaker and software CEO. For most people this decade and beyond, the days of one job, one career, one company are long over. If you work hard and pursue your passions, you’ll have lots of opportunities to reinvent yourself over your lifetime. And thanks to the internet, reinventing yourself is easier than ever before. So don’t worry about what you want to be when you grow up — I know I don’t. Just figure out what you want to do tomorrow.

8) Read.

Sorry, professors, but I’ve learned more from reading great books over the last fifteen years than what I learned over four years in college. I’ve been taught and inspired by Godin, Collins, Lencioni, and many other great authors. In fact, I can honestly say that these nine books have changed my life. For me, it’s nonfiction that I love. For you, it may be fiction, or poetry, or yes, vampire romances. But whatever your preference, know that when you’re reading, you’re learning, and learning is always a good thing. In college you had to read. Now, you getto read.

9) Write.

Writing is a lost art – and the truth is, no matter what your job, industry or career, it’s beneficial to become a better writer. In fact, one of my only regrets is not writing more over the past thirty years. I only began writing regularly five years ago, with the Likeable Media blog. I remember, when we launched it, it was called “Buzz Marketing Daily,” and my wife and business partner Carrie said we shouldn’t do it, as that would force us to post a new article everyday. “Exactly,” I replied. Five years later, it’s one of the most highly trafficked blogs in marketing, and has led to millions of dollars in revenue for our company. I’ve also written two bestselling books, and of course, I love writing now for LinkedIn. You don’t have to write books — but whether it’s a blog, writing code, or just writing emails, practice writing. It sharpens your thinking skills, and you’ll be taken more seriously at any job.

10) Avoid sensational TV news.

There’s not much to say about this, except it’s one of the biggest time-sucks around. I’ve certainly fallen victim to this myself. Something “huge” happens in the news — Newtown, Boston, Cleveland, etc. — and we want to learn more, and to understand, and to mourn, and the next thing we know, we’re glued to the TV for hours and hours. I’m all for informing ourselves about the news. But think about how much you could actually do, and make, and really learn, if you just shut the TV off.

11) Vote.

Vote for candidates and causes you care about. Vote at the ballot booth and with your wallet. Vote on Facebook and Twitter and Tumblr and LinkedIn. Vote with what you share — and don’t share — with what you buy, and don’t buy, and with whom and what you stand for, and don’t stand for. I’m embarrassed to say, like many young people, during and after college, I didn’t vote, despite old people like me and MTV telling me to. Today, thanks to social media, more than ever, the government and companies can be held accountable. Vote in all these ways to keep them accountable.

12) Love. Hard.

I mentioned earlier how scary life is. Love is the scariest part. I mentioned earlier that I married Carrie, a woman I met while working at Radio Disney in my first real job after college. What I didn’t mention earlier is that when I first met Carrie and fell madly in love with her, she was married at the time. I was rejected, and it hurt a lot. I proceeded to do what anyone with unrequited love would do: I went on a reality TV show to find true love. If you Googled that, you’d see that didn’t work out too well for me, either, in the love department. Let’s just say, I fell for a model who said on national TV, “All I said was, ‘I don’t like Dave touching my bare skin.‘” But despite the pain of rejection, the feeling of love is the best thing ever, and well worth the risk of rejection and breakup. And a couple of years later, I got my chance with Carrie, and I haven’t been happier since. The only thing as good as the love of a life partner is the love of your children. I’ve got two, Charlotte and Kate, and they inspire me every single day.

13) Form a personal board of advisors.

When we first started Likeable Media, in 2007, we really didn’t have a clue about what we were doing. I was an idiot trying to run a company. We muddled through somehow though, and things worked out okay. Today, I’m still an idiot, but I have much more of a clue than I used to, thanks to our Advisory Board. Throughout my life, I’ve been blessed by meeting lots of smart, talented people, who have become mentors to me. A little over a year ago, I reached out to eleven of these mentors and asked them to serve on a board of advisors for me, and they all did. You don’t need to own a company to have a board of advisors — you just need to be open to finding mentors and asking them for help along the way.

14) Show your friendship first.

The truth is, as awesome as my Advisory Board is, they might not all have volunteered to help me if I hadn’t offered to help them first. My wife’s dad, who I knew as PopPop, taught me to show my friendship first – to reach out to others and genuinely offer my help, without any expectation of getting anything back in return. It feels really good to give, and the idea of helping others often ends up working out really well, in business and in life. Three years ago, sadly, I lost PopPop to cancer. But the lesson he taught me lives on, and hope you too will be able to benefit from PopPop by giving of yourself before you receive.

15) Be honest and transparent.

At the end of the day, we all have to live with ourselves. Sometimes, it might be tempting to keep secrets, or tell little white lies, or leave things out, or even lie outright to accomplish a goal or get what you want. But as I’ve learned, dishonesty and secrecy only make life harder in the long run. Honesty, openness and transparency are actually a lot easier, because you don’t have to remember as much, and you get to feel good about yourself. In business, transparency breeds trust, and trust breeds customers. But really, in all of life, honesty is the best policy. You already knew this of course, but I hope my spin on it – that honesty is actually easier – will help you a bit along the way.

Don’t worry so much. Just be likeable.

Dan Zadra said, “Worry is a misuse of the imagination.” It’s true; worrying won’t get you anywhere. And, yes, you have a lot that you could be afraid of. But as I told you, and as the great composer Robert Lopez wrote, “Life may be scary — but it’s only temporary.” And we’re all in it together.

There are a lot of things in life that you can’t control. What you can control is how you treat other people, how you treat yourself, and how you treat the planet. So my motto is simple: Above all else, just be likeable.

Here’s to the Class of 2013, and to all of us, just trying to do the simple things each day, to make a better life for ourselves and our children.

I absolutely can’t wait for the release of Daft Punk’s highly anticipated new album, Random Access Memories, slated for release in May. Collaborations with Pharrell, Todd Edwards, Giorgio Moroder, and the godfather, Nile Rodgers, only further confirms that this album is bound to be an epic event. I have been a Daft Punk fan for years, and their music makes all of today’s EDM “superstars” look like squires. Check out a great article from David Drake in Complex titled, Why Daft Punk’s New Album Will Matter. I have also included the video interviews with “The Collaborators.” Enjoy!

Clarity Films, in Berkeley, has mounted a Kickstarter campaign to fund their new documentary about Don Buchla and his many musical inventions.

Buchla is the inventor of the Buchla synthesizer, the Lightning, the Marimba Lumina, and other devices that seem to spring more from magic than engineering.

We’re tracing his path from the early days of the San Francisco Tape Music Center in the 1960s to the present. Many stars — among them Morton Subotnick, Jean-Baptiste Barriere, Marc Battier, Gino Robair, Joel Davel, Suzanne Ciani, Ramon Sender, Mark Goldstein, Alessandro Cortini, and many other composers and musicians — light the way.

Buchla designed a set of wands for Lightning virtuoso Forrest Tobey’s performance at the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square. Buchla sounds were among the last sounds heard in the 20th century.

Everyone should know about him. And this film can make that happen.

Back in November, we posted about GZA’s plan to teach science through hip-hop in New York high schools. CBS News recently did a feature on the program, and they interviewed GZA (and grab footage of him rapping for the students) as well.

Although he dropped out of school in the 10th grade, GZA says he has a lifelong passion for science that he wants to share: “The goal is just to awaken the children, make them more aware and embrace science, and everything else connected to it.”

Ross Birchard is Hudson Mohawke – an artist who constantly pushes the expectations and boundaries of scenes and genres. One of the most influential and forward thinking producers currently. His appetite for sounds started at a young age. A UK DMC finalist at 15, DJing was the focus. It’s through his production that he has grown into the artist he is today and that has taken the kid from Glasgow, to the world.

Moving on from Glasgow, it’s in London where Ross lives and works these days.

“I live in London at the moment. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with it. I do like being there and whenever I go back to Glasgow, I’ll spend a couple of days there and think, I need to get out of here, I need to get back to London… I’ve got a great studio there and I like working there. It’s good in terms of doing collaborations with people. A lot of people come through the city all the time.”

Ross’s first exposure to production was an early Playstation game where he developed his taste for making music. Fruity Loops followed and he’s been keeping it relatively similar ever since. It’s about mastering the simple things for Ross and is what allows him to be so creative with the tools he has.

“I used to do the DMC battles. Before that I had turntables but I was just beat mixing basically. I started doing competitions when I was about 14 – 15, something like that. It wasn’t until after that I wanted to get more into the musical side of things. That was when the music game came out on the Playstation. The Playstation games were similar to really old Atari computers that a lot of electronic producers used to use in the early 90′s. It’s fairly simple but the most basic tools to do the job, and that’s where I learned everything from. My parents got a PC for the house, then I was able to have Fruity Loops. I’m still using the exact same software today basically.

“You work that much harder to master the craft of it, you know what I mean? I’m so happy that I pursued that skill set. That has lead into all of the production stuff that I do now. I started off being really really sample focused, and these days I’ve sort of switched a bit more towards more electronic stuff. I try not to have too much of a strict process with the whole thing. I try and not start things in the same method. I’ve always worked in a lot of different BPM ranges and a lot of different, I guess, genres in general. You know, I’m reluctant to have any sort of little micro scene names tagged onto things.”

Hudson Mohawke is an artist who traverses both the underground and mainstream. It’s a conscious decision to operate between the two and something that he’s always been interested in.

“Off the back of Myspace and a couple of other things, a few different labels have approached me. Luckily they came to me which was a blessing because I was never the kind of person that was going to be going, “Here’s my demo! Listen to this! Listen to this!” One of them being Warp and obviously I was a huge fan of them. I started off doing just an EP to see how it went and then moved on to doing an album after that. I’m about to do a second album, out this year.

“Something that I have really wanted to be involved in for years is getting into the more pop side of it as well as just releasing underground records. I would love to work with someone like Prince. I would really love to do something like a Quincy Jones sort of collaborative project. I always wanted to work with Kanye and you know, thankfully that’s managed to happened, but we spent a month and a half, two months all sort of working together last year. One of his associates approached me to submit some stuff with him and did that, then went on to do a load of sessions with them. That’s sort of an ongoing thing.”

A humble artist at heart, Ross has never been one to bathe in the limelight. It’s always been about the music and letting it stand on its own. Growing the experience of his live show to match the power of his music is where things are heading. There’s no limit to his opportunities for the future.

“I’d really like to get into scoring things, I’d really like to do like an orchestral project or something like that, do some film work. I want to build my own live show up a lot more as well, and for like the next record I want to revamp everything and just make that into more of an experience. You know, I’m able to pursue what I always dreamed of doing when I was younger so I’m thankful for that.”

I came across a great article by the legendary Steve Lewis in his column for Blackbook Magazine. In his piece, Lewis lays out simply and eloquently the reasons why bottle service is here to stay and why nightlife is best left explained to the people who are in it! His explanation details the changing nightlife scene in an ever-changing New York. The following is taken from Blackbookmag.com. Enjoy!

There have been two recent articles professing the end of bottle service that I am being asked to weigh in on. The first:an article by Hardeep Phull on NYPost, and a story by Megan Willett from Business Insider. Both profess a “Chicken Little” approach to bottle service when all that’s really happening is an expansion of existing formats, not a quantum change. I contributed to my pal Hardeep’s article with a quote taken out of context from a much larger dialogue. He has it wrong, but compared to Megan’s take he is spot-on. Megan is clueless.

Marquee’s approach to dance was a calculated take on the market and their place in it. Their approach signals an internal decision to re-brand the NYC Marquee to be relevant to the Vegas Marquee, the highest-grossing nightclub in the country. They also have a Marquee in Australia. The NYC Marquee, after six years of wonderful and a few more of OK, needed a redux to bring it up to speed. I helped with the plan and the layout, but not the design. It was made clear from the start that it was all about the music, with some areas to accommodate big spenders who also cared about the music. It was also designed to be fairly non-competitive with their other NYC properties Avenue and Lavo, where bottle service thrives. Marquee made a smart move using their international DJ booking connections to create cachet. It doesn’t signal a trend of the end of bottle service in any way. Avenue and Lavo are bottle-selling machines. In that regard, the stories are just straight inaccurate.

Output in Brooklyn is as irrelevant to a larger social club concept as Cielo, the joint that spawned it. I love Cielo – did from day one. Its design, sound system, and bookings have made it one of the premier dance clubs in NYC. It has never been part of the larger club culture and has seen no need to be a part of it. Its new Brooklyn outpost should be a winner but it does not signify a trend. It’s merely serving dance aficionados in an ever-expanding Brooklyn scene. The trendy hipsters sipping $15 cocktails and eating $30 entrees at nearby hot spots in the new Williamsburg may never go to Output, and Output’s patrons may never go there but both will coexist in BBurg’s new world. Both are enjoying the transforming neighborhood which recently got a movie theatre and a Duane Reade and The Meatball Shop, and all sorts of other entertainment/distraction choices previously only found elsewhere. Output doesn’t signal the end of bottle service, but merely the expansion, or perhaps the gentrification of BBurg. On a side note ,I find it fascinating that a “no dress code approach to door policy” was mentioned or sited as portending a trend. I live in Williamsburg and basically everyone dresses the same here anyway.

Nightclub Space Ibiza is on its way to New York. It will be big, it will be grand, and it will compete with the other Ibiza-based mega club that thrives in NYC: Pacha. Webster Hall, a little as well. I go to Pacha on occasion, although not as often as I would like. I love Pacha. Eddie Dean and Rob Fernandez are magnificent at what they do. They find new talent, book established stars, and have created a mega club where you can dance and chat and buy bottles of booze or just plain water. They know their patrons and have a social scene that’s unique. They thrive and survive and have vast experience in the market. Space will be coming in and have to learn a lot quick. Big clubs attract big enforcement and scrutiny. They are off-the-beaten-path, but so was Crobar/Mansion before it was pummeled to death.

Will there be competition? Of course. Will Space mean the end of Pacha? OMG, no. Space is a natural development. As EDM spreads to the masses, clubs will embrace the trend. More dance floor is needed to accommodate more dancers. These dancers are not being drawn away from bottle service. These clubs are not in competition with those clubs. EDM DJs command salaries in the high five and even six-digit ranges, and mega clubs are the only places that can afford them consistently Space, Pacha, and Marquee have relationships with these superstar, rock star DJs as they are all international brands. The big club experience is enjoyed by many and shunned by many as well. I loathe EDM but I am confident that EDM heads would loathe my Ministry and Stones and Zeppelin DJ set.

One of the things I particularly disapproved of in these articles and the comments that followed in social media was the comparison of these clubs to the mega clubs of yore. Palladium and Limelight and Tunnel all had door policies that culled crowds of 5,000 down to 3,000. Without getting into a discussion of the merits of door policy, those clubs had highly-developed social scenes at their core. We strived to book the best DJs available and had multiple, sometime six or more dance floors working in the same joint. We mixed crowds from all social strata, races, and creeds. Does EDM appeal to a mixed racial profile? Hmmm, I have not observed that. To me it seems to be white boy shee-it and that’s that, for now.

The articles also failed to recognize that EDM is a genre of music. There are many other genres of music. All have a place in our city which does include people of many ethnic backgrounds and classes and ages. EDM is expanding, but from my point of view it appeals mostly to a certain demographic and has not completely taken over the mindset of NYC clubs. Hip hop, mixed format, rock, pop, salsa and all sorts of other genres still pack them in. Sitting or standing or dancing with friends around a bottle is part of our club way of life. Marquee played a huge role in that development. Bottle service isn’t dying, going away, or being replaced. The writers just didn’t understand what the…. what they were talking about. No offense.

Here is the next installation of the Serato Icon Series featuring Mike Relm. Enjoy!

Mike Relm has cemented himself at the forefront of the video DJing revolution. He walks the line between performer and director and it’s these two sides of his personality that have shaped him into the unique artist he is. His pathway as a DJ began in a place he is still proud to be from.

“I grew up in they Bay area. Specifically, Daly City. I think that probably had a lot to do with my love of DJing. There were a lot of DJs in Daly City for some reason!

“I was in High School when I first learned what a DJ actually was. Every day after school, I would go to a record store and just look through the same records. I don’t know, there’s just something about listening to new things, taking them home and discovering more you can do with it.”

A true turntablist by trade, Mike has a deep understanding of his instrument – it’s the heart of his performance.

“When people ask me, do you play an instrument? I tell them I play the turntable and they say, well… a real instrument. It’s like, let me show you how this is a real instrument!

“There is something about a live show that you can’t see on TV. You won’t even come close. When you’re on stage, you’re under lights and the pressures on, you just pull things out of your ass. It’s like, wow! How did I? Oh that works. Cool.”

Changes in technology have allowed Mike to truly integrate video with his DJ sets.

“It was 2004 when I first saw the Pioneer DVJ. To me, that was like science fiction because at the time, when I would do a show, I would do a set but have video playing in the background. I had to create loops that would match whatever I was doing because there was no way for me to sync it. Then VSL (Serato Video SL) came out and I thought, okay, this is a new ball game…”

The two facets of Mikes personality inspire him in different ways. He lives to connect what he sees with what he hears and to creatively exploit these moments.

“I wanted to go to film school and be a filmmaker. My directing brain helps my DJing brain because it’s just kind of nice when the visuals of life match up with the music of it. It’s what I’m trying to do on stage. It’s like a movie on steroids.

“It’s the dialogue and the visuals that drive a film when you’re sitting down to watch it. Well people aren’t sitting down when they watch me, so, it’s the music that’s driving it.

“DJ’s listen to music differently. I’m listening for separation in the music. Something that I can use or a sound. It’s like, oh! They left that one open. I could jack that and use it somewhere. I watch movies the same way now so it’s not too far of a stretch for me to be doing what I’m doing.”

Mike’s adoption of new technology has been a driving factor in his success. As well as technology being at the heart of what he does on stage, it’s now a key way he shares himself and his work with the world and has opened new doors.

“Relmvision is a YouTube channel I started. That’s where I put all of my remixes. From movies to TV shows, commercials or viral videos. Just whatever.

“I’ve been doing it for about two years now and some interesting things have happened because of that. One of my first remixes on there was the Ironman 2 trailer. From that [Ironman 2 Director] Jon Favreau hit me up. They ended up hiring me to do a commercial based on that style. I was like, wow! People are actually watching this.”

An artist who truly loves what he does, his collective experience in the DJ world and with visual media has given him a rich palette to work with. What is important to Mike is creating something for the future.

“I would definitely like to create a feature film. I feel like there are things that I have been able to do and experience and learn, that I can apply to one piece that will just kind of, live past me.

“I love the art of film making, I love the art of producing and scratching, and I don’t know, I’m pretty lucky. I just get to do what interests me I guess.”
